Meet Henry, one of our most established Varios.

He was among the first to join the hub and be placed on assignment through us. A banking and finance lawyer with five years experience, he qualified at Hammonds and then worked at Reed Smith before deciding to pursue a freelance career that would enable him to balance his legal career with his secondary career in skippering yachts.

He applied to Vario in March and quickly progressed through the application process, to be offered a place in the hub in April. It wasn’t long before we contacted him about an assignment working for one of the major clearing banks in a team assessing claims for consequential loss in relation to the sale of interest rate hedging products. Having been briefed by the Vario team and Pinsent Masons relationship partners for the bank, Henry met with the client, alongside another Vario and a Pinsent Masons banking partner. After this meeting, the client offered both Varios a role.

Working with the in-house legal team

Henry joined the client at the end of May, working as part of a small team assessing the most complex cases as they reach the last stage of the process. His team is part of a much bigger operation, comprising lawyers, bankers and accountants who handle all claims for consequential loss in a methodical and structured manner. Many of these professionals are freelancers and Henry found that this shared focus on ‘getting the job done’ engendered good rapport and team spirit. The quality of the work is high, as are the technical skills of his colleagues.

Henry’s contract was then extended and he was promoted into a more senior role.

Says Henry, “I was pleased to extend my contract with the bank, as the work is challenging and it has been fascinating to see such a large scale operation in practice – a facet of banking I hadn’t experienced until now. The team are all great to work with and it didn’t take long to settle-in and get into my stride. I’m particularly happy to have secured promotion while on assignment, which will stand me in good stead as I progress my career through freelancing. Once my work with the bank comes to an end, I will probably take some time out sail for a few months and then look to secure another placement through Vario.”
